What is reputation?
Reputation is a way to measure the degree of trust you are getting from the community on Fotopedia. Reputation is never given, it is earned by adding high quality photos to the encyclopedia and contributing in a good manner to the Encyclopedia.
You don’t require any reputation for viewing photos on Fotopedia. But the more reputation you earn, the more privileges you gain in the community (see below).
You can gain reputation on Fotopedia by adding good photos in relevant articles. Other Fotopedians will vote on photos you added, and those votes will cause you to gain or loose reputation. For instance, here are a few scenarios:
Another way to gain reputation is to vote on photos:
Here is a table explaining the reputation attribution rules in detail. This reputation system is in beta, so there might be some fine tuning. Please send us your feedback at community@fotopedia.com.
| Rule | Points | Additional information |
| A photo you added is voted up | 2 | |
| A photo you added is voted down | -2 | |
| A photo you added is featured | 5 | |
| A photo you added is removed | -5 | points earned (when photo was voted up or featured) are lost |
| You remove a photo you added | 0 | points earned (when photo was voted up or featured) are lost |
| You voted up on a photo which score doubles | 1 | |
| You voted up on a photo which score is divided by 2 | -1 | |
| You voted up on a photo that got featured | 1 | |
| You voted up on a photo that got removed | -1 | points earned (when photo was voted up or featured) are lost |
| You voted up on a photo that got removed by nominator | 0 | points earned (when photo was voted up or featured) are lost |
| You vote down a photo | -1 | points are reinstated if the photo is removed |
| You voted down on a photo which score doubles | -1 | |
| You voted down on a photo which score is divided by 2 | 1 | |
| You voted down on a photo that got featured | -1 |
|
You can earn a maximum of 100 reputation points per day. Don't worry, because some actions bring you points on following days (like nominating a photo).
By earning reputation, you earn the community’s trust. At start a member can add 5 photos per day and send 5 messages per day. Amass enough reputation points and Fotopedia will enable you to add more photos every day and grant you additional privileges, as listed below :
| Reputation | Privileges |
| 1 |

For instance, you need a reputation level of 30 to be able to vote up on a photo. With a reputation of 1000, you will be able to vote down on photos.
This reputation system will allow Fotopedians with high reputation to gain power and privileges. At the end, there will be little difference between Fotopedians with high reputation and Fotopedia moderators because Fotopedia is a community project, and you should be granted as much power as you have great reputation on Fotopedia.
The website uses the UTC clock for all users - A new day starts at 08:00 am (UTC), that is when you’ll be given your daily quota of photos you can add.
How to gain reputation?
Mainly, by respecting the quality guidelines of Fotopedia and submitting good quality photos to the encyclopedia.
I don’t have photos and I want to be able to vote on Fotopedia.
You can’t vote on photos if you don’t submit photos to Fotopedia. The reason is that we want to be sure that you have a sharp eye before letting you play with votes and vote photos up (or down). If you don’t have great photos on your own, you can still curate photos from Flickr and add the top of the crop to Fotopedia. To do so, simply try to add a photo to an article, and do a search within Flickr Creative Commons licensed photos.
I lost reputation points, can you tell me why?
If you lost reputation points, this is mainly because you didn’t respect the Fotopedia principles. It might be because you uploaded bad quality photos, or voted up a bad quality or irrelevant photo in an article. You can see your reputation evolution on your profile page.
Is my reputation score based on all my activities on Fotopedia since I sign up?
Your reputation score is based on your activity on Fotopedia since 1st January 2011, 00:00 am (UTC). If you signed up earlier, we don’t take into account your previous activity until 1st January 2011 to calculate your reputation score.
Did I lost reputation points when voting down on photos before the reputation system has been implemented?
No, the following rule: "you voted down on a photo: -1" is only active since Wednesday 20th October 2011.
Why can't I vote down on photos?
To vote down on a photo you need a minimum reputation score of 1000. We made this choice because we thing before giving a negative signal to a photo you should prove to the community that you have a sharp eye by adding stunning photographs, and voting up quality and relevant photos. You can still flag photos that does not respect the quality chart.
Where are candidates and top photos gone?
There is no such distinction between candidate and top in the encyclopedia any more, and all photos are displayed in a simplest view in the Fotopedia article (if not, check the filter to "all community photos"). This means you don't need 5 votes on your photo to appear in the article. We added the idea of featured photos to highlight best photos. Featured photos are not top photos from the previous version. This is an editorial choice. Votes are still useful to sort photos and allow the most quality and relevant photos to be seen first (the default sorting order is "by score, descending more").
One of my photos has been featured, but it only has 1 vote. What happens?
As explained in the paragraph above, your photo can be featured even if it doesn't get votes from the community. Featured photos is an editorial choice on Fotopedia, in the same idea as Editor's Picks in a magazine for instance.
