[Solved] Pictures order in new article page design

Dear friends,

As you may have notice, the new article page design has made some (most ?) of the old filtering and ordering options go away. Honest, we were so unhappy with them we were sure nobody was using them...

We're definitely going to try and fix that.

The two available options right now are:

  • all approved photos in decreasing score order.
  • all photos by date and time of most recent activity. That is: when somebody votes in favor of a picture, it goes at the beginning of the album, in the same fashion as the old homepage photo strip.
So let's discuss it. What do we need ? What do you guys want ?

Hmm... tough one. I like both options actually (being one of the persons who really liked the ordering in the old design).

I think I have to go for the most recent activity order (but for me anything is better than random :-))

For the default view, I think the original way worked fine, i.e. sorted by score, in descending order.

The candidates tab view was also useful, for viewing new photos, or any photos which need voting on.

On this point, "all photos by date and time of most recent activity." - I don't quite follow this idea, because it raises the question, why do photos have scores, if that score is never used for anything?

Really difficult to make a choice! Is it possible to have both and choose one when we want one or the other.

In fact the old filtering and ordering options were very useful in article with a lot of photos.

In articles with 5 or 10 photos we don't need.

When I visit I like decreasing order to have an idea of the homogeneity of the quality of photos.

For returning articles when I vote it's useful to have recent activity or nex added photos at the beginning.....

@Marinka: For me it's the same, I prefer anything than random :-(

I totally agree with Jean-Michel's comment above. If I must chose one option, then my vote goes for sorted by score, in descending order. But it's useful to be able to change that every now and then.

Mmm... OK. Let me rephrase that. These two will probably stay. The question is more... what else would you like.

Both sorted by score, in both increasing and decreasing order, and recent activity, i.e. sorted by last change date order. The first  two are useful for voting, and the latter for "keeping up " with a favourite albumn.

Of more interest to me is the still broken community strip, where photos are displayed for voting in last added order, photos added in periods of low activity in fotopedia have a lower chance of  getting voted.

@Jeff: About the community strip, yes, we are aware it is not as efficient as it should be. One idea we are playing with is having several photostrips displayed on the community page (one for recent vote, one for recent additions, ...). We are also trying to find a way to make they update in real time so that you could just let the page open and just gaze at the update coming...

Thanks for your interest

Good, I've felt for some time that that voting strip needed revision. I previously suggested to Adrian that new additions should "Wrap around"  i.e. come to the beginning of the strip a number of times to make sure that they get a fair shot at being voted on. I've put photos in in the past which never got voted, no problem for me personally, but if you are serious about populating the encyclopedia with quality images you don't want people (especially good photographers)  to feel that their efforts are wasted (i.e. " I put it in, and its great, and no-one cares")  This is especially true for more esoteric subjects which may attract little interest.

Splitting the voting strip seems like a good idea because it will allow new photos more focus. If you have several strips why not have one for photos which have not been voted for x days ? Or you might consider a mechanism whereby  Photos which have not ever been voted get put on some kind of exception queue, and Fotopedia volunteers (Highly rated according to your new system ) scan the queue and resubmit for voting or vote them up or down.. It REALLY needs fixing anyway.

Cheers
