Here is a piece of information that can be really useful for people using photos from Fotopedia. Fotopedia is an encyclopedia, and we are fostering sharing of photos all around the world, but only if right owners are respected.
If you are a publisher, you can use photos on Fotopedia that are under Creative Commons licenses. We already talked extensively about Creative Commons and photographers in this blogpost and we are proud to provide Creative Commons content on Fotopedia.com. However, this content should be respected, and here is a way to use Creative Commons photos on Fotopedia.
As a publisher, you have to think of two things before using photos from Fotopedia:
Creative Commons
There are several Creative Commons licenses out there, here is a list on the Creative Commons website. If a photo is under this type of license, you can reuse it on your website (by respecting the terms of the license).
Use of photos for commercial purpose
If you are going to use photos on Fotopedia for commercial purpose, you can only use photos under the following licenses:
We are clearly marking that images are under Creative Commons
On Fotopedia, we are marking photos under Creative Commons in a clear way, at the bottom of each photo. We also mark if the photo is provided with an All Right Reserved license.
A link to the profile of the photographer is also provided, so that you can contact him for any question regarding his photographs. If the photo is coming from Flickr (which use Creative Commons licenses as well), a link to the photo on Flickr will be provided, and you will be able to contact the photographer using Flickr Mail.
Guideline for marking CC content for users/publishers
Creative Commons is providing guidelines for marking content for users/publishers. You can read those best practices on the Creative Commons website. Here is a piece that is worth reading:
All current CC licenses require that you attribute the original author(s). If the copyright holder has not specified any particular way to attribute them, this does not mean that you do not have to give attribution. It simply means that you will have to give attribution to the best of your ability with the information you do have.
Please understand that photographers are always happy when you notice them that you have been using their photos for your work, so don’t hesitate to send them a message, especially when you are not sure of how you can use their photos.
If you don’t respect photographers right, they can engage legal action against you.
