Before adding photos

Make sure you have read this information and understand how the Fotopedia website works. It will make it easier to use the Fotopedia Client.

Adding your photos using the client

With the client you can add photos to articles and albums. Learn more about the difference here.

The upload is seamless in the client. It will feel as if you were just adding photos already there. You can move the photos while they are being added.

1. Open the Fotopedia client and open the photo picker. Then, in the 'Show Photos from' menu, select 'Configure Photo Services...'

2.You can import photos from several services. Enable those you want to use and click the 'Done' button.

3. Open the 'Show Photos From' menu again. You now see menus for the services added. Select the folder you want to add photos from

4. The photos now appear in the photo picker. Drag and drop those you want to add to the article or album you want below

Photos will be uploaded when you drag and drop them for the first time in an article or album.

Tip: To add photos from your computer you can just drag and drop them from your computer into an album or article. You don't need to go through the first 3 steps.

Adding photos from the Community Pool

You can add your own photos but also search through a pool of millions of Creative Commons photos that you can add to your articles or albums.

1. Open the article or album of interest and click the suggestion button.

The suggestion button will only be available in an album or album page if a Wikipedia article is attached to it.

2. Select and drag and drop photos from the search results to the article or album's cover.

If you don't find interesting photos to add you can change the search query, in the top right corner, to get better results.

Moving photos around

To move photos around you will want to use the photo tray in the Fotopedia client. The photo tray is a temporary rack to store some photos.

1. Open the photo picker (1) and select 'photo tray' (2) in the 'show photos from menu'

2. Drag the photo you want to move from it's actual location to the photo tray.

The photo tray is the space where the number 2 is on the image above. It is empty at first.

3. Open the article or album you want to add the photo to and Drag and drop it there from the photo tray.

Adding photos to an article from an album

You can add photos to the encyclopedia from an album. To do so:

1. Attach a Wikipedia article to your album

Click 'Edit' on the bottom bar and scroll under your photos. You will find a Wikipedia logo and search box. Search for an article relevant to the photos in your album. When you have found the most relevant one, click "keep article".

2. Nominate the best and most relevant photos

An overlay will appear on your photos (you might need to leave the album and come back). Nominate your photos using the grey overlay. The photo will be added to the Fotopedia article corresponding to the Wikipedia article you attached.

Before nominating photos to an article it is always best to have a look at the photos already in the article.

Editing a photo's title and description

Double click on the photo you want to edit. It will take you to a photo's page. Press 'Edit' on the bottom bar of the client. You can now change the title and description. Press 'Edit' again and your changes are saved.

Setting and changing the license of a photo

Setting your default license
To set the default license of the photos you are going to add, go to your profile on the website, and click edit profile in the actions menu. Set the default license for your photos to the license you prefer. This setting will not modify the license of photos you have already added to Fotopedia.

Changing the license of a photo
You can change the license of a photo using the client. Open the photo's page in the client with a double click on the photo. Click 'Edit' on the bottom bar. The license field is now editable. Chose the license you prefer and press edit again to exit the edit mode. The license is changed.
Batch changes of licenses are not possible so make sure you set your default license well.

Note on reverting license from Creative Commons to All Rights Reserved
When you set a photo to Creative Commons you should be aware that it is for life. You can change the license back to all rights reserved in the client. Yet anyone who reuses the photo respecting the CC license still has the right to use it and anyone can actually keep reusing it.

One of your photo is under Creative Commons license on Fotopedia and you don't have an account on Fotopedia

Fotopedia enables users to search for photos marked as Creative Commons on Flickr. One of your photo can end up on Fotopedia with the contribution of Fotopedia members who found them relevant to encyclopedia articles. If you want to change the license of this photo, you first need to create an account on Fotopedia and associate your Flickr account to your Fotopedia account.

Associate your Fotopedia account to your current Flickr account

To do so, download the Fotopedia client and log in with your Fotopedia account.

You will then need to associate your Fotopedia account to your current Flickr account to merge your Flickr and Fotopedia identities. All your photos that are already on Fotopedia will be linked to your Fotopedia profile. To associate your Flickr account, open the settings on the Fotopedia Client go to the "External Services" tab and select the Flickr icon.

"Enable Flickr" will ask you to link your Flickr account to your Fotopedia account. Follow Flickr instructions... and now your Flickr and Fotopedia identities will be merged. It can take up to a week to consolidate your identities, and after that you will be able to modify the license type on any photo using the client (see instructions above "Changing the license of a photo").
